Golf in Barbados

With four top quality eighteen-hole courses and two charming nine-hole parkland courses, Barbados has much to offer the visiting golfer. This sport has made massive strides in the last decade and each new addition to the golfing family has strengthened its growing reputation as the premier golf destination in the Caribbean. Pride of place must go the prestigious new Green Monkey course at Sandy Lane, a magnificent course sculptured through elevated rolling slopes with a unique quarry effect, as if the entire course has been cut through solid rock. The holes around the lake are simply stunning, and the attention to detail isjust as impressive as its spectacular layout. But donít arrive at the Sandy Lane Pro Shop expecting to pay and-play, as this course is strictly for the rich and famous, which means that you have to be a guest at the world class Sandy Lane Hotel to be allowed to play!

Royal Westmoreland has enjoyed a high profile in recent times thanks to the annual hosting of the start of the European PGA Seniors Tour, an event that has brought many of the top names in golf to the island, and earned their generous praise for the quality of this fine course. Westmoreland is situated on the gentle rolling slopes of inland St James and enjoys panoram- ic views all the way down to the picturesque West Coast, the most prestigious coastline in Barbados.

The Robert Trent Jones Ill designed course has been masterfully sculptured through challenging local terrain and has some beautiful natural gullies and rock-faces to complement several strategically-placed small lakes, but if one feature stands out more than the others it is the brilliant par threes. Each par three involves a carry, and by differing the tee box each hole takes on a completely new challenge and ambience. The rules have recently changed and you now have to play with either an owner or a member or Royal Westmoreland.

The Barbados Golf Club course at Durants is the busiest on the island and for good reason, as it is an excellent test of golf, affordable, and it has a thriving social scene around a well-placed clubhouse overlooking the ninth and eighteenth greens. Sunsets at this location are stunning, and although the course has been set up to be user friendly for all grades of golfer, it can be a severe test for the best players when the wind blows and the green keeper pushes back the tee positions and moves the pin positions around! Coral-waste desert feature bunkers capture much needed rainwater, which is recycled through a strategically placed lake that captures balls by the hundreds and crucifies the errant shots. Top magazines Golf Monthly and County Golfer have been lavish in their praise of this fine course and its friendly clubhouse, which has already established itself as the soul of Barbados golf and the main location where aspiring young stars of the future will learn the game.

Rockley Golf Course is a nine hole executive course that meanders through the colourfully landscaped condominium clusters at Rockley Resort. Even though most golfers at Rockley play nine holes, the course offers alternative tees for the second nine. The yardages are approximately 2800 yards for nine and 5600 yards for eighteen holes, par 35 and 70 respectively. The course is beautifully landscaped and is challenging to all types of golfers. The key to mastering the course is to manage yourself around the course and to sacrifice distance for accuracy. Rockley is full of character and has the best clubhouse atmosphere and a thriving social atmosphere where visitors mix freely with locals.
